Australia at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, has been a big hit. Australia was very successful in the swimming competitions at the 2000 Olympics.The women won 1 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medals and the men won 4 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals. The Australians also set three world records. Ian Thorpe competed in 6 events winning 3 gold and 2 silver medals while Susie O’Neill competed in 8 events winning 1 gold and 3 silver medals.

The biggest rivalry was between the United States and Australia in the 4 × 100 m relay in Swimming. Americans won the event every time it had been contested. However in the 2000 Olympics, Australia beat the Yanks by 0.19 seconds to win a gold medal.
