Mount Panorama Race Winners – 1960-1970. Mount Panorama is a triangular circuit which incorporates the challenging and demanding Conrod Straight, Griffin’s climb, Mountain Creek Corner and McPhillamy Park, amongst other sections.
The official name of the V8 Supercar race has changed over the years depending on the race’s sponsor and length of the race. However, most Australians call it the Bathurst 1000 and although we list each year with the actual name used, overall we’ll continue to refer to the race as the Bathurst 1000.
The Armstrong 500 was held at Phillip Island in Victoria for the first 3 years (1960-2) and then moved to its permanent location Mount Panorama Bathurst. During the 1960s the race was 500 miles (not kilometres) long. It wasn’t until 1973 that the race changed to the metric system and became the Hardie-Ferodo 1000. 500 miles doesn’t equal 1000km, but the added laps made the name change fit.
