Australian placenames can evoke the history of local Aboriginal people and the country’s long-distance explorers, as well as its unique natural features. Map resources include historical maps highlighting significant events, towns and settlements.
The Australian National Placenames Database when completed contain all known Australian names, documenting their pronunciation, origin, meaning, history, cultural significance, status, and location. It will eventually be accessible over the Internet to everyone.
