The 1970 Commonwealth Games (Scottish Gaelic: Comann a’ Chuimris Ghairm) were held in Edinburgh, Scotland, between 16 and 25 July 1970.
THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME the name British Commonwealth Games was adopted.
From 1930 to 1950 it was called the British Empire Games. From 1954 to 1962 it was called the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. And finally, since the 1978 Games, the name was simplified to the Commonwealth Games.
The 1970 Games is also notable for other firsts. It was also the first time metric units rather than imperial units were used in events. It was also the first time they used photo-finish technology. And it was the very first time the Queen attended.
When Aussie Pam Kilborn took gold in the 100 metres hurdles she became only one of three athletes ever to win 3 consecutive Games medals in the same event. Australian Lawrie Peckham won gold in the high jump clearing 2.14 metres (7′.25″), making him the first man in Games history to clear 7 feet.
The opening and closing took place at the Meadowbank Stadium. This was the site for the 1986 Games as well. The 1970 Games had 121 events in 10 sports.
