Australian Sports Links is a sports directory that includes comprehensive links for basketball in Australia, including the NBA and the WNBA.
Although not as popular as it once was, basketball is still a sport enjoyed by Aussies. The National Basketball League (NBL) is the top-level men’s basketball competition (established in 1979) with ten teams in the country plus one team in New Zealand.
The Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) is the top women’s basketball league (established in 1981).
The Opals are Australia’s women’s national team. They won silver in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. They also won gold at the 2006 FIBA World Championship.
For international competitions, the men’s basketball team, the Boomers, represent Australia.
Many of our very talented Australian players have left Australia to play in the NBA in the United States such as Andrew Gaze, Andrew Bogut, Chris Anstey, Shane Heal and Luc Longley.
