1st ARIA Awards Ceremony
2 March 1987
Sheraton Wentworth Hotel, Sydney, NSW
Hosted by Elton John.
The ARIA Awards are presented annually by the Australian Recording Industry Association to recognise achievements in the Australian music industry.
Today’s ARIA Awards is seen by around 2 million people on television, and approximately 2,500 recording industry guests and 5,000 members of the general public. That’s a far cry from it’s modest beginnings in 1987 when only 500 recording industry people attended the very first ARIA Awards ceremony. The first three years had no live performances and it was not televised until 1991.
