The Australian athletes, who competed in a wide range of sports, had great success, winning gold , silver and bronze medals.

Australia sent 252 athletes (180 men and 72 women) to the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics. They competed in 145 events in 24 Olympic sports. Australian athletes have competed in all of the Summer Olympic Games since the games started.

Duncan Armstrong won a gold and a silver medal in Swimming. Dean Woods won a silver and a bronze medal in Cycling. Australia won a gold medal in Women’s Field Hockey.

Jodie Clatworthy was the youngest athlete for Australia (16 years 169 days) and Erica Taylor the oldest (54 years 281 days).
