Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport – Australian Songs

Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport is a wonderful Australian song Words and music by Rolf Harris.

Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport
sung by Rolf Harris on you tube

This YouTube version is Rolf Harris singing Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport at the Royal Albert Hall in London UK. You’ll also see Rolf using his famous Wobbly Board throughout the song. Fun!

This was the number 1 hit for four weeks in Australia in 1960. Some of you may remember there was another verse to the song. Later recordings removed it because it had a derogatory reference to Aboriginals.

Rolf Harris has stated the verse was misunderstood and never meant to be derogatory. He no longer sings that verse in his performances.

We’ve also chosen to leave that verse out of this very entertaining and much loved song.

1982 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony Brisbane Rolf sang this song and included the following lyrics:

Let me welcome you to the Games, friends,
Welcome you to the Games/
Look, I don’t know all of your names, friends,
But let me welcome you to the Games.

(spoken introduction)
There’s an old Australian stockman,
lying, dying. He gets himself up on
one elbow, turns to his mates,
who are gathered ’round, and he says:

Watch me wallaby’s feed, mate,
Watch me wallaby’s feed.
They’re a dangerous breed, mate,
So watch me wallaby’s feed.
All together now!

Tie me kangaroo down, sport,
Tie me kangaroo down.
Tie me kangaroo down, sport,
Tie me kangaroo down.

Keep me cockatoo cool, Curl,
Keep me cockatoo cool.
Don’t go acting the fool, Curl,
Keep me cockatoo cool.
All together now!

Tie me kangaroo down, sport,
Tie me kangaroo down.
Tie me kangaroo down, sport,
Tie me kangaroo down.

Take me koala back, Jack,
Take me koala back.
He lives somewhere out on the track, Mac,
So take me koala back.
All together now!

Tie me kangaroo down, sport,
Tie me kangaroo down.
Tie me kangaroo down, sport,
Tie me kangaroo down.

Mind me platypus duck, Bill,
Mind me platypus duck.
Don’t let him go running amuck, Bill,
Mind me platypus duck.
All together now!

Tie me kangaroo down, sport,
Tie me kangaroo down.
Tie me kangaroo down, sport,
Tie me kangaroo down.

Play your didgeridoo, Blue,
Play your didgeridoo.
Keep playing ’til I shoot through, Blue,
Play your didgeridoo.
All together now!

Tie me kangaroo down, sport,
Tie me kangaroo down.
Tie me kangaroo down, sport,
Tie me kangaroo down.

Tan me hide when I’m dead, Fred,
Tan me hide when I’m dead.
(spoken)
So we tanned his hide when he died, Clyde,
And that’s it hanging on the shed.
All together now!

Tie me kangaroo down, sport,
Tie me kangaroo down.
Tie me kangaroo down, sport,
Tie me kangaroo down.
