25th ARIA Awards Ceremony
27 November 2011
Allphones Arena, Sydney Olympic Park, Sydney NSW
No official host this year.
The ARIA Awards is Australia’s premier music awards ceremony. It is run by the Australian Recording Industry Association to recognise excellence, innovation and achievement across all genres of Australian music.
The Sydney quintet Boy & Bear made a good showing this year by winning 5 Awards for their self-produced, debut album, Moonfire. The band members, Dave Hosking, Jake Tarasenko, Killian Gavin, Tim Hart and Jon Hart, joked earlier on the red carpet they would split the trophy in five if they won one. Now they can each have their own.
Not to be outdone, Gotye (Wally De Backer) was awarded 6 ARIAs for 2011 – Single of the Year, Best Pop Release, Best Male Artist, Producer of the Year, Best Video and Engineer of the Year.
Kasey Chambers once again showed her Country Music star power adding another Best Country Album Award to the other 9 ARIAs she has from previous years: 1999, 2000, 2002 (3 ARIAs), 2003, 2004 (2 awards), and 2008.
On a more sombre note, the legendary Billy Thorpe was awarded posthumously Best Adult Contemporary Album for his album Tangier. This was the first time an ARIA was awarded to someone who has passed away. Collecting the Award on the night was Billy’s family.

Category Changes
Four old categories reappeared for 2011. Breakthrough Artist – Single and Breakthrough Artist – Album replaced Breakthrough Artist. Highest Selling Single and Highest Selling Album replaced Most Popular Australian Album and Most Popular Australian Single. Those last two were removed from public voting. As a result two new categories that allowed public voting were added: Most Popular Australian Artist and Most Popular Australian Live Artist. As long as they were making changes, they moved Best Music DVD to the Fine Arts Awards section.
The winners of the Fine Arts Awards and Artisan Awards were announced on 11 October.
The 2011 ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Awards was Broadcast on GO! at 7:30pm on Sunday, 27 November 2011 and for the first time streamed on 3G mobiles.
