The 1978 Commonwealth Games (Scottish Gaelic: Gàidhlig Chois na h-Alba), officially known as the XVth Commonwealth Games, were held in Edinburgh, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 1978.
THIS WAS THE FIRST GAMES to use the present day name of the Commonwealth Games. It has changed 4 times since 1930.As host nation, Canada topped the medal table for the first time. The opening and closing ceremonies took place at Commonwealth Stadium. The hammer throw event caused a problem concerning the Queen’s safety. It seems that a throw went wrong and the hammer landed in an area near the Royal Box, almost hitting a CBC cameraman. Although the Queen was in no danger of being hit by that hammer, it was decided that the Queen should leave the stadium. So the hammer competition was halted until the Royal Party had left, a decision made by the officials. An official at the next Games held in Canada (1994) quipped that the hammer competition would be scheduled for whatever day the Queen was not there.1978 Games had 126 events in 11 sports: athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, lawn bowls, shooting, swimming and diving, weightlifting and wrestling.
The 1978 Commonwealth Games mascot was named “Keyano” which is a Cree Indian word meaning unity and brotherhood. Keyano is a Swan Hills Grizzly Bear native to Alberta, Canada. The shaggy Grizzly is one of North America’s largest bears reaching over 400 kg at maturity.
