2013 Australian Of The Year Named

Publishing icon Ita Buttrose, 71, has been named Australian of the Year for 2013. She received the 8 kilogram glass trophy from Prime Minister Julia Gillard on the lawns of Parliament House in Canberra on Friday 25 January 2013.

The Award was given in recognition of her groundbreaking media career, in addition to raising awareness about health issues. Buttrose rose from a 15-year-old copy girl at The Australian Women’s Weekly to become the first woman editor of the Daily Telegraph. In 1971 she created Cleo magazine for the Packers.

Ita Buttrose used her very public profile to champion health awareness of arthritis, prostate cancer, breast cancer and HIV/AIDS. She is Alzheimer’s Australia National President.

2013 Country Music Awards
and Tamworth Country Festival

The Tamworth Country Music Festival runs from 18 January to 27 January 2013. It’s the largest music festival in the southern hemisphere and one of the top 10 in the world.

There are over 2,200 events and 4,000 different performances in the 80 venues that make up the 2013 Festival. The Cavalcade community parade on Saturday 26 January is sure to attract thousands of spectators again this year.

Geoffrey Rush has been named Australian of the Year for 2012 for his lifetime of contribution to the arts. He received the 8 kilogram green glass trophy from Prime Minister Julia Gillard on the lawns of Parliament House in Canberra.

An internationally acclaimed Australian actor (The King’s Speech, Shine, Pirates of the Caribbean) and producer, Geoffrey Rush is won multiple acting awards including an Oscar, Tony Award, Emmy Award, and Golden Globe Award. He is also ambassador for UNICEF Australia and patron of the Melbourne International Film Festival.

Since 1960 the Australian of the Year Award recognises people who inspire us through their achievements to be better, do better. They challenge us to contribute in our own way to making Australia and the world a better place.

Trivia — the name Logies was coined by Graham Kennedy. He thought the inventor of the TV, John Logie Baird’s middle name was a good name for the award.

2012 ARIA Winners

Once again Gotye (Wally De Backer) was the big winner at this years 2012 ARIA Awards receiving 4 ARIAs for Best Male Artist, Best Pop Release, Best Australian Live Act, and Album of the Year.

Repeating her win last year, Kimbra picked up the ARIA Award for Best Female Artist. While Melbourne rapper 360 received an impressive six nominations, only one ARIA for Breakthrough Artist Release was received.

2012 TV Week Logie Winners

Nine Network’s Hamish Blake (Hamish & Andy) won this year’s coveted Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on TV at the 54th TV Week Logie Awards 15 April 2012.

After a video montage of his TV career, the 66-year-old music personality Molly Meldrum was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame. Molly is still at home recovering from his near-fatal fall last December.

The ABC received 8 of the 23 awards handed out during the event. Foxtel had eight nominations, but won nothing. The rivalry continues between Nine Network with six Logies and Seven Network with five.

Golden Guitar Winners 2012

Beccy Cole and Keith Urban led the winners this year collecting two Golden Guitars each at the 40th Country Music Awards Ceremony Saturday, 28th January.

Keith Urban won Male Artist of the Year for Long Hot Summer. Beccy picked up her award for her song Waitress remarking that she was shocked to get Female Artist of the Year. APRA Song of the Year went to Shane Nicholson for Bad Machines. Catherine Britt picked up Single of the Year for Sweet Emmylou.

The CMAA Awards is a highlight of the 10-day Tamworth Country Music Festival. About 50,000 music fans came to the Festival this year. The Awards is organized by the Country Music Association of Australia (CMAA). More than 400 Golden Guitars have been awarded since it was first held in 1973.
