The Koala
(phascolarctos cinereus)
Many people, especially Americans, think a Koala is a bear, but it isn't. It's a distant cousin to the wombat. This cute animal is a tree-dwelling, herbivorous (plant-eating) marsupial. A marsupial differ from other mammals because that they give birth to immature young which then develop further in a pouch. The word 'marsupial' comes from the Latin word marsupium, meaning 'pouch.'
The Koala is Australia's most popular and most loved marsupial mammal. So please call it a koala and not a koala bear.
This koala is cute and cuddly, but scramble him and he will drive you wild. This is one of the hardest of the series.
