Although it had been discovered many years earlier, the government "officially" declared gold had been discovered on 22 May 1851 by Edward Hargraves at Ophir NSW. Following that announcement, thousands came to the Bathurst plains seeking their fortune in what was Australia's first gold rush.

 

Did you know . . .
The largest gold nugget ever found with a metal detector is the "Hand of Faith". It was found by Kevin Hillier on 26 September 1980 in Wedderburn, Australia. It weighs an amazing 875 troy ounces (27.21kg) and is 47cm by 20cm by 9cm. The nugget was sold to the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada USA where it is on public display.
