The Australian Museum in Sydney, NSW is the oldest museum in Australia. It was founded on 30 March 1845 by the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Earl Bathurst. The NSW Governor provided £200 yearly towards its upkeep.

The museum was originally known as the Colonial Museum and renamed in June 1836 the Australian Museum. In 1849 the museum moved to its current location on the corner of College and Park Streets. It didn’t open to the public until May 1857. The museum’s collections feature zoology, mineralogy, palaeontology, and anthropology and is also involved in indigenous studies research and community programs.
