ARIA Awards, an annual flagship event on the Australian Music Calendar-celebrates every year to recognize the innovation, achievements, and excellence in Australian Music. These annual series of awards nights are commonly and informally known as ARIA Music Awards or ARIA Awards, actually conducted by Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) since 1987. ARIA Music Awards stands for “The Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards”. The performers who have acknowledged an Australian Recording Industry Association Music Award are commonly known as ARIA Music Award. A person who is been an ARIA award winner or just nominated to ARIA Music Awards grabs a lot of media attention and that particular artist or music band gains a lot of popularity from the public and even the recording sales increases several-fold. A part from these, an artist and his music album also enjoys the chart significance of ARIA, for example, after Ben Lee won three awards, his album Awake Is the New Sleep jumped from No. 31 to No. 5 in the ARIA Charts, its highest position.

A Brief History on Trophy
The beautiful and significant ARIA Award Trophy came into the picture in the year 1987.The prestigious trophies which were in use from 1987 to 1989, designed by Philip Mortlock. And the ones which are in use since 1990, were designed by Mark Denning and looks like a tall triangular pyramid actually made from solid stainless steel. These pyramid-shaped trophies weigh 1.75kgs of metal. Denning is a polymath, someone with multiple talents, accomplishments, and degrees across fields. Let us know in detail.
The ARIA Music Award when first inaugurated in 1987, was just only an industry only event and also was not telecasted in television until the year 1993. From 1987 to 1989, Philip Mortlock, Warner Music designer taken up the responsibility of designing a trophy and created a coolest design to the trophy that looks like a vinyl with the top right corner cut out to say ‘ARIA’. But the ARIA was not happy with the design offered by Philip and hence they decided to conduct a design competition in 1990. In that competition, Mark Denning showed his mark by designing a timeless piece that represent the pinnacle of success for the recipient and to work with the ARIA logo and submitted to the ARIA Board Members. His design was topped the list of multiple entries and since then his design has been the symbol of achievement among both Overseas and Australian artists.
“I started playing around with shapes with some silver cardboard and this one seemed to work out…The ARIA’s actual logo then proceeded to become this pointy sort of shape, so it all sort of tied in together”, Mark Denning said.
About ARIA Awards
In 1987, Sheraton Wentworth Hotel in Sydney held the very first ARIA Music Awards, hosted by Sir Elton John to recognize the innovation, creativity, efforts, talent, hard work, and excellence across all genre of Australia Music. Since then, ARIA Music Awards have become the Australia’s Pinnacle Awards Ceremony plus and developed to honor myriad memorable performances and moments. And the winners of the very first ARIA Awards in 1987 included young John Farnham, INXS, and Crowded House.
How artists get nominated for an ARIA Award
Every year ARIA members encompassing record companies, artists, CD distributors, manufacturers, etc. are contacted by ARIA Event Producer and are finalised by the ARIA Awards Judging Panel. These finalised members are guided on how to submit and consider recordings or music albums and singles by artists. So, the ARIA Music Awards solely signify only those recordings released by ARIA members. In case, if any person or artist wants to join ARIA, then he/she has to enter their recordings in ARIA Awards.
Note: Generally, the membership applications close off in the mid of July every year. Only those memberships which are approved and current on that date are eligible to enter recordings or music album in the ARIA Music Awards.
How the ARIA Award Winners are determined?
Initially, all the membership entries lodged by the ARIA members are evaluated for the right and relevant recordings that really suits the particular ARIA award for which these entries have been come. Artists who wants to make their recording a relevant one, he/she must release their recording or music album in the current eligibility period or previous eligibility period. For Example: If an artist wants his/her recording eligible for 2018 ARIA Music Awards, then the recording must get released during current eligibility period i.e. from 8th September 2017 to 6th September 2018 or previous eligibility period from 2nd September 2016 to 7th September 2017 (provided the recording should not get nominated previously). Once the eligibility is analysed, all the relevant and eligible entries at the ARIA are then presented to judging schools or voting academy.
Usually, the Voting Academy at ARIA consists of around 800 representatives first judges the seven categories from every area or genres of Australia Music Industry.
The other 16 categories are judged by specialist judging schools comprising of representatives who have special hands on experience with that genre of music.
Another five awards are dogged by Popular Vote. These awards include: (i) Best International Artist (ii) Song of the Year (iii) Best Video (iv) Music Teacher of the Year, and (v) Best Australian Live Act.
The rest, Lifetime Achievement Awards, ARIA Hall of Fame, and Icon awards are presented at the discretion of ARIA Board.
